MnSCU Faculty Discipline Meeting
Cragun’s Conference Center, April 19, 2002

 English Discipline Report Summary
Facilitators: Phyllis Ballata, Mary D’Andrea, Evonne McKinzie

Transfer issue/problem one:

Assessment/placement is inconsistent within MnSCU schools, thereby establishing different student entry levels into college composition.

Strategy(s) to address transfer issue/problem one:

  • Establish full staff support within the Office of the Chancellor to support a faculty-driven review/redevelopment of an open-enrollment school* placement policy.

(*State U’s require ACT assessment of all new freshmen.)

Transfer issue/problem two and three:

Content and credits of Goal I college composition course(s) are inconsistent, causing transfer problems for students.

Strategy(s) to address transfer issue/problem two:

  •  If a college does not offer the preffered two levels of college composition, then the college composition course must be at least 4 semester credits.

Strategy(s) to address transfer issue/problem number three:

  •  100% of the student writing competencies in Goal I must be fulfilled in the college composition course(s).
