Sociology Discipline Report Summary
Facililitators: Jean Evens, Tim Price, Linda Balk

 

Transfer issue/problem one:

Insure the quality and integrity of the curriculum.

Strategy(s) to address transfer issue/problem one:

  • Meet again as a discipline and have an extensive work session that includes sharing syllabi, best practices, and discussion of course content.
  • Give faculty more control over curriculum and adjuncts.

 

Transfer issue/problem two:

Insure that Sociology faculty members have required credentials in the field.

Strategy(s) to address transfer issue/problem two:

  • Use the faculty-driven procedures of the state universities to select faculty members.
  • Screen and have an available pool of qualified faculty candidates.
  • Establish a mentoring/training process for adjunct faculty members.
  • Work with Center for Teaching and Learning to establish an e-mentoring program and a site for posting best practices.
  • Allow release time to mentors. 

Transfer issue/problem three:

Work together as a statewide discipline to improve communication, resolve trust issues, clarify our institutional mission, and share research.

Strategy(s) to address transfer issue/problem three:

  • Share our best practices through the Center for Teaching and Learning
  • Establish a Listserve and a syllabi bank.
  • Support from MnSCU and campus leaders to hold future discipline meetings to facilitate further work as agreed upon at this meeting.
