After completing Step 1, you
should have one or several colleges in mind for transfer.
Next you should:
- Check
"Find a Program" to see where various majors are
offered in Minnesota: Minnesota
State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU), Private
Colleges, and University
of Minnesota.
- If
the student is following a specialized professional or technical
program, they should check articulation
agreements to see if the present college has agreement(s)
with their future college(s).
- There
are two general ways you can transfer:
- Students
typically take courses that meet general education and/or
pre-major requirements for the major at the institution
to which they intend to transfer. Transfer planning
guides are available to assist students in knowing what
courses to take. The Course Applicability System (CAS)
allows students to search for planning guides. These
students often follow the Associate in Arts degree.
- Students
who are in programs other than Associate in Arts or
general education (AS, AFA, AAS, Diploma, Certificate)
can find out if and how their credits will transfer
by checking to see if Articulation Agreements exist.
- Minnesota's public colleges
and universities (MnSCU and U of M) maintain articulation
agreements that specify which courses taken at a college
can be applied to specific program/major goals at the receiving
institution. Check articulation
agreements to see if your present college has agreement(s)
with your future college(s).
- Check the Transfer
Course Equivalency Tables and CAS
to check each course individually. Course equivalency tables
show how each specific course transfers from one institution
to another.
- Contact your Transfer
Specialist/counselor/advisor if agreement(s) or course
tables are not listed.
- Check admission
requirements.
- Attend college fairs and information
sessions to meet with college representatives.
- Visit a college
campus and speak with admissions, transfer staff, and faculty
members in person.
