Completing the General
Education Requirements
The students'
best bet to transfer for a 4-year degree in Minnesota is to
complete the Minnesota
General Education Transfer Curriculum (MnTC), a specific
set of courses encompassing 10 goal areas (40 credits). Once
these goals have been completed, the student will have satisfied
the general education component of any degree program at 4-year
MnSCU institutions. The
University of Minnesota also recognizes the MnTC as fulfilling
the lower division general education component of its degree
programs; in addition, students in all degree programs must
complete a writing intensive set of requirements.
The student may also wish to explore with a two-year college
counselor/advisor the pluses or minuses of completing a full
two-year Associate in Arts degree, which is usually 60 - 64
semester credits in length.
If the
student is transferring to an out-of-state or private institution,
the transfer specialist or advisor/counselor can provide guidance
in selecting basic general education courses that are generally
accepted in transfer. The student should contact the Admissions
Office and/or advisors at the transfer institution to find
out the course requirements for their program. The transfer
institution may have course equivalencies established for
the current institution the student is attending. The Course
Applicability System - CAS may be helpful in providing course
equivalencies and planning guides for participating institutions.
After the first semester or two, the student increases their
chances of taking courses that won't meet requirements at
a four-year school. However, if the student knows his/her
major, they are advised to complete what are standard courses
for that major in their freshman and sophomore year along
with some general education courses.
General
Recommendations:
1. Counselor/advisor
can help determine which general education program may be
most appropriate. They may also be able to help students who
are undecided with career counseling and/or career classes.
The Course Applicability
System (CAS) may be helpful in providing course equivalencies
and planning guides for participating institutions.
2. Students
who are transferring from one Minnesota State College and
University to another may satisfy a college/university's general
education requirements by taking courses which are included
in Minnesota
General Education Transfer Curriculum. The University
of Minnesota, University of North Dakota, and other institutions
also honor the entire MnTC. Students should try to meet the
general education requirements for the institution to which
they plan to transfer.
3. Students
may be able to test out of some of the requirements by using
the CLEP, AP or other course equivalency programs. See Credit
for Prior Learning on MnTransfer. Make sure students check
the Credit for Prior Learning Policies at the transfer institution.
